PeopleSoft Query Instruction Modules

  • The three modules comprising PeopleSoft Query Instruction are:
    • Part I – Basic Query Concepts and Query Viewer

    • Part II – Query Manager

    • Part III – Advanced Concept

  • Reviewing the Modules:

    • The pages are in the form of Adobe PDFs derived from extensive PowerPoint presentations.
    • Sicomments icon 2nce this was created from a PowerPoint presentation, there are occasional off-screen Comments that you can access in Internet Explorer and Firefox.  If there are comments associated with a slide/page, you’ll see a small icon in the upper left.
    • Viewing the file with Internet Explorer.  IE has the most tools available for reading the PDF.
      • You can click on the icon at the bottom to Show the Adobe Reader Toolbar
      • Searching is available from a column on the left.
      • You can view the Comments through a number of methods by hovering over the icon and right-clicking.
    • Viewing the file with Firefox.
      • You can review the Comments in Firefox in a manner similar to Internet Explorer.S
      • To search, you can use the Ctrl-F combination.
    • Viewing the file with Chrome.
      • With Chrome, you will see an icon similar to the Comments icon, but if you click on it, the text will not appear.
      • To search, you can use the Ctrl-F combination.
    • Within the slides are two sets of tools:  Study and Activity boxes to reinforce each lesson, and Notes and Tips which contain important features of the topic being discussed.
      • Notes and Tips boxes include information, tips, hints, and lists.  These are bordered in red and have the Wesleyan Cardinal in the upper right corner.
      • Study and Activity boxes contain either step-by-step directions on using Query’s components for specific tasks or they describe further details on processes.  In Part I and II, the query that you create from scratch is built on throughout a number of lessons, and the steps are found here.  These boxes are bordered in blue and have a magnifying glass in the upper right corner.

  Part I – Query Viewer

This module will introduce you to PeopleSoft’s Query tool.  Query is a graphical tool that allows users to easily create queries of the data contained in the PeopleSoft database through Query Manager.  The data can be viewed through Query Manager and through Query Viewer.

In addition, there is information about the nature of the database where the PeopleSoft data are maintained.  The type of database used by the PeopleSoft application is called a relational database.

(Note:  The highlighted links below are related to additional pages on those topics under the Query Presentations/Demos section and the Query Tools and References of the SFIS Blog, as well as some links to Oracle and HEUG sources.

Objectives:  In this module you will learn about:

  • Understanding the basics of PeopleSoft Query
    • What Query is and is not
    • Understanding your Database
    • Access to data and use of results

 Part II – Query Manager

In this module you will learn the basic functions of Query Manager and how to create a simple query by selecting a record and specific fields.  You will find many of the processes in Query Manager relating to search and running a query are similar to those used in Query Viewer.

After you master the basics, you will then be able to concentrate your efforts on formatting the data you have extracted from the database. You will learn how to create more complex queries that will select data from multiple tables in what is called a “join.”  You will use runtime prompts that allow the user running a query to specify criteria to select data from the database.  After you have completed this class you will be able to locate the appropriate records for your query, write a simple query and format the output in a usable manner.

Objectives:  In this module you will learn how to:

  • Select, run, and print an existing query
    • Select an existing query
    • Pages in Query Manager
    • Searching by Record and/or Field
    • Running a query with a prompt
